the obama administration has no plan for next year in the romney view. and secondly, how they took their eye off the ball in the first administration and in looking at health care first and not enough on the jobs side of the equation and i think romney connected with people in saying his first focus is economic growth and job creation, and i think he did a very, very effective job of that last night. stuart: brian gardner, i appreciate you being with us. jobs, taxes, appearance, approach. we've got it. thank you very much indeed. a little earlier this morning, i'm going to the gold report. about 90 seconds early. sorry about that if i have upset your routine, i did want you to see that. gold is getting close to $1800 an ounce. 1,789.60, we're up 9.80 as of this morning. and i want you to check out the latest cover of news week. this is the coverage of news week, can you read it clearly? the democrats' reagan? what? assuming a second term? carol roth and general beala our post debate company and we have business and politics coming for you. newsweek, can you believe that? newsweek is our firs
a difference. the difference is what barack obama does in the next two rounds. it was a very poor performance. you have to give credit to mitt romney who was on his game he made his arguments. not say that he very from the truth, that is neither here nor there. he argued the case effectively. >> the economy created 5 billion -- million jobs in the past few years. is that true? >> i do not know. these numbers are so squishy. it is not 100% clear to me who is right about jobs. what i know is when they were saying on friday morning when they release those numbers, that for the first time, more people who were out of the work force were getting jobs. that is news. >> it is also important to keep in mind who had been hard hit by the economy. largely younger americans, african-americans, or hispanics. those who are either not going to vote or are supporting president obama. so i think you have got a pool of swing voters out there who are actually doing better right now in this economy than many people. >> let us talk about entitlements. >> if you are 60 or older, you do not need to listen any furth
to sweat about next wednesday because he's somewhat in the same position as president obama. he's been vice president in for four years. had a lot of things going. been a long time since he's debated. paul ryan has been in the cut and thrust of congress, to be better prepared. however, ryan is in the shoes president obama was in last night and the expectations are high for ryan. i think most people feel that paul ryan will walk joe biden's dog in this debate, and that's a down for him. i would venture that the vice presidential debate may get the largest audience of any vice presidential de debate we've had so far. >> in 2008 with the introduction of sarah palin was the first time the vice presidential debate was ever the highest 01:39:43:rate ed debate. we have this again. >> governor romney, last night, people say he mangled the truth to put it gently. the obama campaign -- they did a smart thing today. got up bright and early this morning realizing they took a loss last night and began pointing out where governor romney had not said what he said before, had not stuck to the truth. howeve
obama on stage next week? >> when you're not that bright, you can't get better prepared. >> that the romney campaign's post-debate message from their national campaign co-chair. the president is lazy and not that bright. here was the obama campaign's post-debate message. >> the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries. but the guy on stage last night, he said he'd never heard of tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. never heard of them. and he said, if that's true, he must need a new accountant. so now we know for sure that wasn't the real mitt romney because the real mitt romney is doing just fine with the accountant that he already has. whoever it was that was on stage last night doesn't want to be held accountable for what the real mitt romney's been saying for the last year. >> president obama cannot rewind and unleash that last night at the podium? but the way he and his opponent's campaign have adjusted their tactics in moving on from last night's debate tells you more about where the
debate behind them president barack obama and mitt romney are gearing up for their next face off later on in the month. the president is laying low at the white house today with no public events scheduled. he spent yesterday rallying supporters in ohio. mr. romney who rallied yesterday in florida is preparing for the next debate. romney will hold a debate victory rally this evening. >>> september proved to be a lucrative month for the president's re-election campaign. democrats raised $181 million. that's at that record. and in the last month of the campaign that cash could prove crucial especially for ad buys in toss up states. >>> thousands of criminal cases are now in jeopardy and some people say they may have been wrongfully convicted because of a scandal uncovered in boston. how could it happen? >>> boston's legal system faces a potential nightmare. thousands of cases dating back nearly a decade could be gentlemen par di jeopardized by a lab worker that the afternoonered with evidence. >> it was refreshing because i didn't think it was real. >> reporter: it was real until last wee
for the next round? >> this wasn't just about performance. the obama folks think it's style and performs and and looking down instead of looking up. last night was about substance. looked at president obama and said you paid for obama-care by cutting $716 billion from medicare. you didn't have to do it. president obama had no answer. mitt romney said president obama you talk about a few tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. you have given much more tax breaks to the alternative energy energy and you have nothing to show for it. president obama just looked at him. at the end of the day barack obama couldn't engage on substance last night. the facts aren't going to get any better between thousand and the next two debates. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today.
and that means offering his own way ahead and, really explaining why the next four years under president obama will be disastrous, shouldn't focus on the last four years, focus on the next four years and clear choice, and really lay out what four more years of obama policies, in terms of debt and, no economic growth and in terms of a failed foreign policy, would look like, and lay out the romney alternative, and, i think he needs to go right at obama. my advice, ignore jim lehr, and, like i do with juan williams... ignore the question and, do not answer jim lehr, speak to obama in the second person, you have failed and here's what we can do differently, to make it a sharp contrast. >> chris: interestingly enough, liz, when i talked to congressman ryan, about the fact that romney needs a clear victory, because of the state of the polls, he pushed back, very much against that. does he need a clear victory? >> yes. he does, i mean, i think there is universal consensus he has to shake up the trajectory of his race and a safe performance will not probably be enough at this point. having said that,

why the next four years under president obama would be disasterrous. shouldn't focus on the last four years. focus on next four years and what four more years of obama policy would look like and lay out romney alternative. and i think he needs to go right at obama. my main advice would be ignore the moderator. sort of like juan does with you. when one argues with me and ignores all your questions around all that. he has to take do not get -- do not answer jim lehrer. go after president obama and speak to him in the second person and say you have failed unfortunately and here is what we can do differently and make it a sharp contrast. >> chris: interestingly enough, liz, when i talked to congressman ryan about the fact that romney needs a clear victory because of the state of the polls he pushed back against that. does he need a clear victory? >> he does. i think there is universal consensus that he has to do something to shake up the trajectory of the race and a safe performance probably isn't going to be enough at this point. having said that i think it might not be that hard for rom

worked perfectly for him. if i was barack obama, i would worry about the next two. >> i think i would be worried about if i was in the obama campaign, deval patrick was on earlier, replaced governor romney in massachusetts, he was trying to maintain that obama won on substance but i don't think he won on any criteria. >> also, i got to tell you, go back and look at his closing remarks. it was rambling, it was disjointed, he seemed lost. lehrer, unfortunately for president obama, let him go on and ramble for well past the two minutes and the longer he went, the worse it became that he was clearly just unfocused. i think that hurt him. you know, piers, it's not so much what you say but it's how you come across to people. you've heard this all the time, i'm sure, in acting classes that 90% of communication is nonverbal. on the nonverbals, barack obama sent all the wrong messages. he looked petulant, he looked frustrated, he looked angry, he looked disinterested at times, and while he may have said some good things, it did not come across that way as a confident president who was proud of
